Play Boulder Oosterpark

architect  Aldo van Eyck

For 700 locations in Amsterdam, architect Aldo van Eyck designed a diversity of playgrounds. They form a physical translation of Van Eyck’s theories about space and place. Of all the playgrounds, only 90 remained in 2001, and these have been designated as cultural-historical monuments. The paddling pool in Oosterpark is one of them.

In the pool, a universal object has been placed that, in terms of shape and scale, fits the original design while also suiting a new era. As with Van Eyck, there are no figurative forms, but rather an element that leaves open how it can be used. Opportunities for climbing, sliding, and running are combined in a sculptural flat ‘bubble’ that rises above the water.

Unfortunately, this object in the historic paddling pool turned out to be somewhat unsafe. It was just a bit too slippery. So now it was our task to apply an anti-slip coating to make it less slippery. We applied a few millimeters of durable polyurea and finished it with a beautiful white topcoat!
